Overview

This project consisted of a magazine style guide that can be applied to a range of deliverables external to the magazine itself such as merchandise and web design. On this module I found working with lecturers that had years of experience working in independent magazines invaluable. I had to develop my ideas and concepts throughout this project to align closer to the target audience that I established at the start of the project. I found it hard to identify a niche target audience for the topic that i chose, however woking along with the lecturers, they helped me find key features of my magazine that I could incorporate to make my magazine more attractive.

Issue 4 Mars

Issue 4 is all about the planet mars. The colour chosen for mars is red and is a constant theme through the magazine. Each magazine issue uses the same halftone effect with its images, but with a different colour to represent the planet. As mars is called the Red Planet, i decided that red would be the most sensible choice.

A simple website was designed to allow fans of the magazine to get merchandise and to also find out where to locate the magazines.

Conclusion

In conclusion I found that I developed as a designer during this project. As a brand and packaging designer, editorial print design isn't my main strength. I learned a lot of skills in InDesign that I wouldn't have discovered if i didn't push myself.  I owe a lot of these new-found skills to Sara Chapman and Rob Banham. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and the challenge that came with it. Having a real physical product to show for this project is very satisfying and holding my magazine reminds me of the hours i spent in development.
